Helping the Helpless

WAPIZ received another request from residents of a building in DPC asking us to come and clean up a house of a mother daughter duo. The mother is 87 years old.Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
It’s been a year since Wapiz team has been cleaning up homes of the underprivileged, neglected seniors of our community. We have seen the worst and we take it as a challenge and do our best to give them a more hygienic home to live with respect.
This mother daughter duo have gone thru hard times. They sometimes have been surviving on one meal a day. Wapiz started monthly doles and cleared medical bills. We also approached Mr Tamboly and he started monthly doles from WZO too. We found a donor who sponsored a new Fridge for them as the old one was broken.
Wapiz took up the task of cleaning their home. We had approached the BMC but they refused to step in and told us to first fumigate the entire home n then only start the cleaning process.
No one was willing to step in. Left with no choice Wapiz Team took it up to clean the place. When we entered this particular house we couldn’t believe that 2 persons can accumulate so much stuff. It was suffocating. They have received no help from  neighbours, family, friends or community members to help them clean their home.
The room we first took up has not been lived in for years. It had become a dumpster filled with white ants and insects. The 2 wooden beds and cupboard were badly infested with white ants. The cupboard fell to the ground when we tried moving it. There were 5- 6 metal trunks which were so corroded that their bottom layer just disintegrated.
This clean up is surely the worst ever. Its so ironic that members of our community are living in this pathetic situation. We only pray that no Parsi should be left to live like this. It is our moral responsibility to look after such members of our community who are neglected.
We understand how it starts. First a chair is piled with clothes and newspapers, then it spills over to the sofa and the bed and before one realises within no time one corner of your home has become a storage corner and that goes on till a room is designated as a store room…then one feels overwhelmed and the task of clearing up the mess cannot be handled especially when there is old age, isolation, sickness, financial constraints and a crumbling dilapidated home.
This has been an exhausting, back aching weekend but very fulfilling. There is a long road ahead. A lot is left to be cleaned and then have the home fumigated. Next update in the coming weeks.
Thank you all for always supporting our Helping Hands for Seniors Project.
